Remove the “AI Info” Label From Instagram Posts, Stories & Reels

Instagram decides on its AI label mostly from the tags inside the file you upload — C2PA Content Credentials and the IPTC digital source type — not from how the picture looks. Strip those tags before you post, right in your browser: nothing is uploaded and the pixels are never re-encoded.

Why Instagram labels your photo

Editing apps and AI generators write industry-standard signals into the file: C2PA Content Credentials, and the IPTC digital source type inside XMP. Meta’s systems read them when you upload. If the file says the image was created with AI, Instagram puts an AI label on the post, Story or Reel. If it says the image was only modified with AI — a Generative Fill patch, an AI resize or colour change — Meta says the label stays off the post, but the information is still listed in the post’s menu.

There are two other ways to get the label: you switched on Add AI label while posting, or the image was made with Meta AI. Meta has not added a setting that turns the automatic label off. The label has had several names — “Made with AI” until July 2024, then “AI info”; Meta’s help pages now call it the AI content label.

So the label often says more about the tools you used than about the photo. What is C2PA metadata? explains who writes these records and what they contain, and AI info on Instagram covers where the label appears and what each placement means.

How to remove the AI Info label from an Instagram photo

  1. Clean the exact file you'll upload

Drop the original photo into the tool above — the one in your camera roll or the one your editor exported. Don't export or re-save it afterwards: some apps write fresh metadata on export.

  2. Choose what to remove

Keep the default, All metadata, or pick AI markers only to keep camera details and copyright. Every C2PA manifest, XMP field and EXIF block found in the photo is listed.

  3. Download the verified copy

Each cleaned file is checked again before you save it: no AI markers left, pixels unchanged. On iPhone, tap Save or share and choose Save Image, so the copy lands in Photos where Instagram picks it from.

  4. Upload that copy to Instagram

Create the post, Story, carousel or Reel cover from the cleaned copy, not the original.

Remove AI label from Instagram posts, carousels, Stories and Reels

  • Feed posts — Clean the photo before you create the post. The tags go up with the file at the moment you share it.
  • Carousels — Every slide is its own file, so clean all of them — including the one you only touched up. A slide you skip still carries its tags into the post.
  • Stories — Clean the photo first, then share it to your Story. Stories also have their own Add AI label switch, under Options → Label AI; leave it off only if the image really is not AI-generated.
  • Reel covers — A cover picked from your camera roll is a separate image — clean it like any photo. The Reel's video itself isn't supported yet.
  • Profile photo — Meta's help pages describe AI labels on posts, Stories and Reels. The separate AI-generated profile label is one you switch on yourself, under Edit profile.

Already posted? Delete, clean and upload again

Cleaning a file on your device doesn’t reach the copy that is already on Instagram: the tags went up with the upload, and Instagram doesn’t let you replace a published photo’s file. If the label came from the file’s metadata, delete the post, clean the original on your phone or computer, and post the cleaned copy. Uploading the same file again brings the same tags back.

Deleting a post also removes its likes and comments, so decide whether the label is worth that. If the label is there because you switched on Add AI label when posting, cleaning the file won’t change it.

What cleaning can’t do on Instagram

  • Images made with Meta AI are labelled even after they're downloaded and posted again, according to Meta — cleaning the file doesn't change that.
  • Invisible watermarks such as SynthID live in the pixels, not in the metadata, and survive cleaning.
  • If you switched on Add AI label when posting, the label comes from you, not from the file.
  • Meta says its approach will evolve, so no tool can guarantee the label won't appear.
  • It isn't a way to pass AI content off as real: Meta requires a label on photorealistic AI video and realistic AI audio, and laws such as the EU AI Act require disclosure of deepfakes.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Instagram post say "AI content" or "AI info"?

Meta reads the C2PA, XMP and IPTC records inside the file you upload. If they say the image was created with AI, Instagram puts the label on the post. If they say it was only edited with AI — one Generative Fill patch in Photoshop is enough to write them — the details go into the post's menu instead. You also get the label if you turned on Add AI label while posting, or if the image came from Meta AI.

Can I remove the label from a post that's already live?

Not by cleaning. The tags went up with the file, and Instagram doesn't let you replace a published photo's file. Delete the post, clean the original file here, and upload the cleaned copy.

Does deleting and re-uploading the same photo work?

Only if the file itself was cleaned. Re-uploading the same file carries the same metadata back to Instagram, so the label usually returns. Clean the file first, then upload that copy.

Does this work for Stories, carousels and Reel covers?

Yes, for the photos in them — clean every file before you upload it. Each carousel slide is its own file, so clean all of them, including the one you only touched up. A Reel cover picked from your camera roll is a separate image and needs cleaning too; the Reel's video isn't supported yet.

Will cleaning change how my photo looks?

No. Only metadata blocks are removed; the image data is never re-encoded. Resolution, colour and sharpness stay as they were, and each cleaned file is compared byte for byte with the original before you download it.

What if Instagram detected AI from the pixels instead?

Then metadata cleaning won't help. Invisible watermarks such as SynthID live in the pixels, not in the file's metadata, and no metadata tool can remove them without changing the picture. Images made with Meta AI are labelled even after they're downloaded and posted again.

Which formats can I clean for Instagram?

JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF, up to 50 MB each and 100 files at a time. iPhone HEIC photos work as they are — there's no need to convert to JPG first, and no re-encoding.

Is removing metadata allowed?

Removing metadata from files you own is legal in most countries, and it's routine for privacy — the same step strips GPS location and device details. It isn't a way to pass AI-generated images off as real: Meta requires a label on photorealistic AI video and realistic AI audio, and laws such as the EU AI Act require disclosure of deepfakes. Only clean files you own or have permission to edit.
